The vocabulary on this site is a merged, deduplicated list intended for GRE-style verbal prep. Words and definitions come from several prep-oriented compilations and community datasets; we combine them into one master list and preserve example sentences when the source provides them.
Master list at a glance
Approximately 2,259 unique headwords after merging overlaps. Major inputs (each contributes overlapping sets, not disjoint partitions):
- GregMat-style deck data — high-quality entries with example sentences; extracted from a community Anki deck (madhukar01/gregmat_vocab).
- ketankj compilation — broad list derived from multiple prep books in dictionary form (ketankj/GRE-words-desktop-notification-using-python).
- Barron’s 800–style set — classic high-frequency list (manually curated into our JSON pipeline).
- Kaplan-style list — standard prep vocabulary (manually curated).
- Princeton Review Hit Parade–style list — smaller high-frequency slice (manually curated).
Many words appear in more than one source; those overlaps are intentional: they highlight words that multiple prep publishers emphasize. We remove duplicate headwords so each entry appears once in the trainer.
What we do not ship
We do not reproduce proprietary ETS item banks, Magoosh paywalled content, or Manhattan Prep book text. Official GRE wording and item design are owned by ETS. If you want publisher-specific lists (for example Magoosh 1000 or Manhattan 1000), use those publishers’ materials directly.
Roots and categories
Root groupings on the categories pages are editorial aids for study, not linguistic authority files. They help you cluster words for memory, not claim etymology for every sense of every word.
Corrections
If you believe a definition is wrong or an attribution should be updated, please check back once this site lists a public feedback or contact option. Include the headword and, when possible, a short citation to a reputable dictionary or publisher errata.
